The MWF is not interchangeable with the XWF or XWFE: they fit different housings. Buy the MWF if your old filter says MWF or GWF, or if GE lists it for your model.

How to replace the MWF

  1. Find the filter. Its location varies by model (inside the fresh-food compartment, in a door, or behind the bottom grille); your owner's manual shows where.
  2. Turn the old filter to the left until it stops (about half a turn) and pull it straight out. Keep a towel handy.
  3. Remove the cap from the new MWF, insert it and turn it to the right until it stops. It raises itself into position. Do not overtighten.
  4. Run water from the dispenser for about 3 minutes (around 1.5 gallons) to clear air and prevent sputtering.
  5. If your dispenser has a Reset Water Filter pad, hold it for about 3 seconds to reset the filter status.
