How to Reset the Water Filter Light on a GE Refrigerator
Quick answer
If your GE refrigerator has a RESET WATER FILTER pad, press and hold it for about 3 seconds until the red light goes off (on some models it turns green). Models that use chip-equipped filters, including RPWFE touchscreen models and XWFE models, reset automatically when a new genuine filter is installed and have no manual reset.
Which reset does your GE fridge use?
- RESET WATER FILTER pad (GE, GE Profile and Monogram models with a manual reset): hold the pad for about 3 seconds until the red light turns off or turns green.
- RPWFE filter with an LCD touch screen: the fridge reads the chip in the new filter and clears the Replace Water Filter message by itself. There is no manual reset.
- XWFE filter: the reset is also automatic. When you install a new XWFE, the Filter Status light flashes 3 times and turns off. Press FILTER STATUS to see the remaining filter life as a percentage.
What the light colors mean
- Orange: replace the filter soon.
- Red: replace the filter now, or sooner if water flow to the dispenser or ice maker drops.
- Off or green: normal after a reset.
The reminder is based on time, water use or both, depending on the model. A power outage restarts the timer, so the light may not come on exactly 6 months after a change.
If the light won't reset
- Manual reset: hold the pad for about 3 seconds. Too short a press leaves the red light on, and holding too long can turn it off and back on.
- RPWFE: the display should read FRONT. If it reads BACK, the filter is in backwards; take it out, turn it round and reinstall it.
- RPWFE and XWFE: a filter without GE's ID chip won't be recognized and the dispenser won't work. Genuine RPWFE filters have a black square chip outline under the label on the back.
- XWFE showing ERR with a flashing red light: the fridge sees no filter, a damaged or wrong filter, or a non-GE filter. Install a new XWFE or GE's RFID bypass plug (WR17X33825).
- If a genuine filter is installed correctly and the light still won't clear, GE says the refrigerator needs service.

Frequently asked questions
Why did my GE filter light turn off by itself?
XWFE and RPWFE filters have a chip the refrigerator reads. When it detects a new genuine filter, it resets the reminder without any button press.
Why didn't my GE filter light come on after 6 months?
On timer-based models a power outage restarts the count, so the light can come on later than expected. Change the filter about every 6 months anyway, or sooner if flow slows.
Will a non-genuine filter reset the light on a GE fridge?
On models that read a chip (RPWFE and XWFE), a filter without GE's chip usually isn't recognized: the reminder won't clear and the dispenser may stop working.
