XWFE
Replace
about every 6 months

The XWFE has a built-in chip. The older XWF has no chip and is not a guaranteed substitute: fridges that expect an XWFE can show an error with an XWF. Buy the XWFE if GE lists it for your model.

How to replace the XWFE

  1. Find the filter: usually in the upper corner of the fresh-food compartment or inside the left door, depending on the model.
  2. Turn the old filter to the left until it stops (about half a turn) and pull it out. Keep a towel handy.
  3. Remove the cap from the new XWFE, insert it and turn it to the right until it stops. It raises itself into position. Do not overtighten.
  4. Run water from the dispenser for about 3 minutes (around 1.5 gallons) to clear air and prevent sputtering.
  5. XWFE filters have a chip, and on many models the filter status turns off by itself once the new filter is detected. If your panel has a Reset Water Filter pad, hold it for about 3 seconds.
