Does your fridge also have an air filter?

Whirlpool sells Filter 6 in a kit with its FreshFlow air filter (EDR6VR6), and many refrigerators that take it also have an air filter. Not all do: check for a small vented air filter cover inside the fresh-food compartment before you buy one.

How to replace the EDR6D1

  1. Find the filter. Its location varies by model (inside the fresh-food compartment, in a door, or behind the bottom grille); your owner's manual shows where.
  2. Turn the old filter counterclockwise about a quarter turn and pull it straight out. Keep a towel handy for drips.
  3. Remove the protective cap from the new filter, line it up, push it in and turn it clockwise until it locks.
  4. Run water through the dispenser to flush out air and carbon dust, following the volume in your manual (often 2-4 gallons).
  5. Reset the filter indicator light (usually by holding the filter or reset button for about 3 seconds).
