How to Change the Water Filter in a Whirlpool Refrigerator
Quick answer
Open the filter door or cover inside the fresh-food compartment, turn the old everydrop filter a quarter turn counterclockwise and pull it out. Remove the cap from the new filter, insert it and turn it a quarter turn clockwise until it locks. Flush 2 to 3 gallons through the dispenser, then hold the Filter (or Reset Filter) button for about 3 seconds.
Which everydrop filter does your Whirlpool use?
- Filter 1 (EDR1RXD1): many Whirlpool side-by-side models, such as the WRS321SDHZ, WRS325SDHZ, WRS315SDHZ and WRS571CIHZ. Its location differs by model: in some it's inside the fresh-food compartment, in others (owners report the WRS325FDAM) it's behind a door in the bottom grille.
- Filter 4 (EDR4RXD1): many Whirlpool French door models, such as the WRF555SDFZ and WRX735SDHZ.
- Filter 2 (EDR2RXD1): many KitchenAid and some Whirlpool French door models, such as the KitchenAid KRFC704FPS and KRMF706ESS.
- Other everydrop numbers (Filter 3, 5 and more) are used in other Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid and Amana models. Maytag and KitchenAid filters install the same way as Whirlpool's.
The everydrop number is printed on the filter itself. To be certain, type your model number into our filter finder.
Where is the water filter on a Whirlpool refrigerator?
- Inside the fresh-food compartment, near the top front: behind a compartment door that opens downward. On some models the filter pops out when the door opens; on others you turn it counterclockwise and pull it out.
- In the base grille at the bottom front of the fridge: either a quarter-turn filter with a cap you turn to the left, or a filter released by a push button on the grille.
If the filter is stuck
- Release the water pressure first: turn off the water supply, then dispense several cups of water and try again.
- Door that opens and pops out: close and reopen the filter door, making sure it opens fully.
- Turn-out filter inside the fridge: open the door completely; you may need to remove the shelf just below the compartment to get a grip.
- Quarter-turn filter in the base grille: put a cloth over the cap and grip it with standard pliers to turn it a quarter turn. Unplugging the fridge and removing the bottom grille gives better access.
- Push-button filter in the base grille: press and hold the button while the filter ejects. If it only moves a little, push it back in and press the button again.
- Don't force it. Whirlpool warns that too much pressure can break the filter or damage the water system.
Step-by-step instructions
- Find the filter. Look inside the fresh-food compartment for a filter door or cover, often near the top. If there isn't one, check the bottom grille for a filter door. Your manual shows the exact spot.
- Remove the old filter. Interior filters: turn the filter a quarter turn counterclockwise and pull it straight out. Bottom-grille filters: open the filter door; the filter should eject so you can pull it out. Hold a towel underneath for drips.
- Prepare the new filter. Remove the protective cap from the new filter. Check the everydrop number matches the old filter.
- Install the new filter. Insert the new filter and turn it a quarter turn clockwise until it stops and locks. Close the filter door or cover.
- Flush the filter. Whirlpool's guides say to dispense and discard 2 to 3 gallons (8 to 12 L) of water to clear air and carbon. The first water may sputter.
- Reset the filter status light. Whirlpool filter lights don't reset by themselves. On many models, press and hold the Filter or Reset Filter button for about 3 seconds. Some models use a button combination, so check your manual if a single button doesn't work.
After you change the filter
- Check the filter area for drips after a few minutes. If it leaks, remove the filter and reinstall it, making sure it turns fully to the locked position.
- Discard the first batch of ice if you want the freshest taste.

Frequently asked questions
How often do I change a Whirlpool water filter?
Every 6 months, or sooner if water flow slows or the taste changes. everydrop filters are also rated for a set number of gallons, printed on the packaging.
Are everydrop and Whirlpool filters the same?
Yes. everydrop is Whirlpool's own filter brand, used across Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, Amana and some JennAir models.
Why won't my Whirlpool filter light reset?
The reset button or combination varies by model, and holding too briefly only shows the status. Hold for a full 3 seconds, and if that fails, try the other button methods in our Whirlpool filter light reset guide.
