How to Replace the Air Filter in a Frigidaire Refrigerator

Updated 2026-10-28 · Based on manufacturer instructions (sources below)

Quick answer

Frigidaire refrigerators with an air filter keep it at the top of the fresh-food compartment. Pull the housing straight out, or on models with a snap-in cover squeeze the top and bottom of the cover to remove it. Swap the filter, with the carbon face facing out in a snap-in cover, put the housing or cover back, then hold Air Filter for 3 seconds. Frigidaire says to replace it every 6 months.

Which air filter does your Frigidaire take?

  • PureAir Ultra II (PAULTRA2): the air filter listed in many Frigidaire use & care guides. Frigidaire sells it in kits with the PureSource Ultra II (EPTWFU01) and PurePour PWF-1 (FPPWFU01) water filters.
  • PureAir RAF-2 (FRGPAAF2), previously called AF-2: listed in the use & care guide for PurePour Connect (PWF-2) models, and sold in kits with both the PWF-1 and PWF-2 water filters.
  • PureAir RAF-1 (FRGPAAF1): sold in a kit with the PurePour PWF-1 (FPPWFU01) water filter.
  • PureAir Ultra (PAULTRA): the older filter, sold in a kit with the PureSource Ultra (ULTRAWF) water filter.

Frigidaire pairs the PurePour PWF-1 water filter with three different air filters, so your water filter alone doesn't tell you which air filter you need. Read the part number on the air filter you're replacing, or check the Filter Replacement section of your use & care guide.

The air filter only absorbs odors inside the fridge. It's a separate part from the water filter and from the PureAir Produce Keeper refill in the crisper.

Where is the air filter on a Frigidaire refrigerator?

Frigidaire's use & care guides put it at the top of the fresh-food compartment: in the top center on some models, and in a housing next to the water filter on others. The appliance diagram at the front of your guide labels it Air Filter or Damper/Air Filter Housing.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Find the air filter. Look at the top of the fresh-food compartment, in the center or next to the water filter. Your use & care guide's appliance diagram shows the exact spot.
  2. Remove the housing or cover. If your fridge has a pull-out housing, pull it straight out. If it has a snap-in cover, squeeze the top and bottom of the cover together and lift it off the liner.
  3. Swap the filter. Take out the old filter and unpack the new one. In a snap-in cover, snap the new filter in with the open carbon face facing outward.
  4. Put it back. Slide the housing back into position, or squeeze the cover and snap it back into place.
  5. Reset the air filter status. Press and hold Air Filter (Reset Air Filter on some panels) for 3 seconds. Depending on the model, a tone sounds, the light goes off or the status returns to Good.

After you change the filter

  • Frigidaire recommends a new air filter every 6 months. The control panel tells you when it's due; on many models the status changes from Good to Order and then Replace.
  • If your crisper has a PureAir Produce Keeper, Frigidaire suggests replacing its refill every 6 months along with the air filter.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I change my Frigidaire refrigerator air filter?

Every 6 months, Frigidaire says. The air filter status on the control panel prompts you when it's due.

Is the PAULTRA2 the same as the FRGPAAF2?

No. The PAULTRA2 is the PureAir Ultra II and the FRGPAAF2 is the PureAir RAF-2. Frigidaire sells them as different filters, so buy the number printed on the air filter in your fridge.

How do I reset the air filter light on a Frigidaire refrigerator?

Press and hold Air Filter, or Reset Air Filter on some panels, for 3 seconds after fitting the new filter.

Does the Frigidaire air filter clean my drinking water?

No. It only absorbs odors in the fresh-food compartment. Water and ice go through a separate water filter, such as the PurePour PWF-1 (FPPWFU01).
