How to Replace a Refrigerator Water Filter
Quick answer
Find the filter (inside the fridge near the top, in the bottom grille, or in a door bin). Twist the old filter counterclockwise or press its release button and pull it out. Remove the cap from the new filter, insert it and twist clockwise or push until it locks. Flush a few gallons through the dispenser and reset the filter light.
The three types of refrigerator water filters
- Twist-in interior filters: inside the fresh-food compartment, usually near the top. Turn a quarter to half turn to remove. The most common type today (Samsung, LG, Whirlpool everydrop, Frigidaire PurePour).
- Push-button grille filters: behind the bottom grille of older side-by-side models. Press the button and the filter pops out.
- In-door or bin filters: in a door bin or behind a panel in some French door models.

Step-by-step instructions
- Find your filter and part number. Locate the filter and read the part number on it, or look up your fridge model in our filter finder to get the right replacement.
- Relieve pressure. If your manual recommends it, turn off the water supply and press the dispenser until the flow stops. Put a towel under the filter.
- Remove the old filter. Twist it counterclockwise and pull it out, or press the release button for push-in types.
- Install the new filter. Remove the protective cap, insert the new filter and twist clockwise until it locks, or push until it clicks.
- Flush the new filter. Run 2 to 4 gallons through the dispenser (check your manual) to clear air and loose carbon.
- Reset the filter light. Hold the Filter or Filter Reset button for about 3 seconds on most models. The light won't reset by itself.
After you change the filter
- Check for leaks after a few minutes. Most leaks come from a filter that isn't fully locked or a cap left on.
- Mark the date on the filter or your calendar so you know when the next change is due.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to turn off the water to replace a fridge filter?
Usually not, because the housing shuts off when the filter is removed. Some manufacturers still recommend it to reduce drips.
Why is my water slow after changing the filter?
Air trapped in the new filter. Keep dispensing water for a few minutes and the flow should return to normal.
How do I know which filter to buy?
Read the part number on your current filter or look up your fridge's model number, which is on a sticker inside the fresh-food compartment.
