Refrigerator Air Filters: Which One Fits Your Fridge
Quick answer
Refrigerator air filters are brand-specific and separate from the water filter. Whirlpool, KitchenAid and Maytag use the FreshFlow W10311524, LG uses the LT120F, Frigidaire uses PureAir filters such as the PAULTRA2 or FRGPAAF2, and Kenmore Elite fridges with the CleanFlow feature use the 9918. Each maker says to replace it about every 6 months. Not every fridge has one: look for a vented cover inside the fresh-food compartment.
Refrigerator air filters by brand
Each maker's own replacement interval. Not every fridge has an air filter: look for a vented cover or small door inside the fresh-food compartment.
| Brand | Air filter | Replace |
|---|---|---|
| Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag | FreshFlow W10311524 (replaces AIR1) | Every 6 months |
| LG | LT120F (ADQ73214404) | About every 6 months |
| Frigidaire | PureAir: PAULTRA2, FRGPAAF2 (RAF-2) and others, by model | Every 6 months |
| Kenmore Elite | 9918 CleanFlow (46-09918) | Every 6 months |
| GE Café and Monogram | ODORFILTER (some bottom-freezer models only) | Every 6 months |
| Samsung | Deodorizer on some models, cleaned rather than replaced | Clean once or twice a year |
Whirlpool, KitchenAid and Maytag air filter: FreshFlow W10311524
Whirlpool says the air filter is on the rear wall of the fresh-food compartment: usually behind the blue LED-lit vent cover near the middle, or behind a vented door near the top. Depending on the style, remove the plastic cover or lift the door open, snap the new filter into place and close it.
Then reset the status: on many models, press and hold AIR FILTER for 3 seconds. The display shows when it's due: blue means good, yellow means order a new one and red means replace it. Reset steps vary by model, so check your owner's manual if the button isn't there.
Kenmore refrigerator air filter: Elite 9918 CleanFlow
Kenmore sells the Elite 9918 CleanFlow air filter (46-09918) for fridges with the CleanFlow air filter feature, and says to replace it every six months. Your use & care guide shows where it sits and how to reset the reminder.
GE refrigerator air filter: the Café and Monogram odor filter
Only some GE refrigerators have an air filter: GE offered an odor filter on some Café and Monogram bottom-freezer models, and its parts listing says the filter is for those models only; on Café models it sits next to a fan on the left rear wall of the fresh-food compartment. GE sells it as ODORFILTER (a 2-pack) and says to replace it every 6 months, or sooner if odors come back.
Samsung refrigerator air filter: the deodorizer
- Samsung Australia says not all Samsung fridges have a deodoriser, and that it should be cleaned about once or twice a year. Check your user manual to see whether yours has one.
- To clean it, remove the cartridge (on some models, hold the top and bottom of the filter case to unlock it; on others, gently pry the cover off with a flat-head screwdriver), soak it in clean, warm water for at least 4 hours, and let it dry completely, which can take up to 8 hours, before putting it back.
- Samsung Australia gives the single deodoriser filter a recommended life of about one year, depending on use. Samsung's support can tell you the replacement part for your model.

Frequently asked questions
Do all refrigerators have an air filter?
No. Many fridges have none. Look for a vented cover or small door on the rear wall or ceiling of the fresh-food compartment, or check your owner's manual.
How often should you change a refrigerator air filter?
About every 6 months, according to Whirlpool, LG, Frigidaire, Kenmore and GE. Samsung Australia says its deodoriser should be cleaned once or twice a year and lasts about a year.
Is the refrigerator air filter the same as the water filter?
No. The air filter only absorbs odors inside the fridge. Drinking water and ice go through a separate water filter, which has its own part number.
Is AIR1 the same as the W10311524?
The W10311524 FreshFlow filter is the current part that replaces the AIR1, so it's the one to buy if your old filter says AIR1.
